Josephine was either the fourth or fifth member to join. Shortly before or after Nick. Supposedly she was found by Jon at a
bar she was playing saxophone at. Not only was she very talented, but she also had a broken leg. Jon thought
this might
inspire some sympathy to record executives, but that didn't work. On the two albums she plays on, there are
very few songs without the saxophone. It truly was an essential part of the sound! (though ironically The Last
Film doesn't really include it.)
Jo never intended on singing, but the departure of Sylvia Griffin meant that
several singing parts needed vocals. This meant that some saxophone parts needed to be cut from larger songs.
And maybe this delayed and ultimately prevented Desert Song from being a single but Watching Their Eyes
released pretty quickly!
God I dunno. I love her to bits and pieces but unfortunately Jo lives with this very common condition called
"being a woman" so a lot of people didn't ever care to talk about her, or to her, until her tragedy struck. I
wish I knew more about her. I wish the Patches magazine wasn't the only press we have that centers around her.
But I guess that's a lot to ask for. Gillian Gilbert and Rowetta didn't receive that treatment and they're in
much, much larger bands. They're also Mancunian coincidentally. Maybe I'm projecting and assuming the woman in
the band was oppressed. I don't know her. Maybe she just chose to be quiet and sheltered! Right. Maybe she
hated KTP!! Ah, where was I? I remember reading that Jo hates miming. That's a real thing about her! That
means she loves performing for performance sake!
Jo left the band to pursue more work as a live saxophonist. Including with Pete Townshend, Tears For Fears and
The Communards. In 1988 she got into an accident which rendered her too distressed to play music any more. It
is a tragedy, but it's important to remember that a tragedy doesn't shape her. Josephine should be known for
her skills as an artist, and not the worst day of her life. Simon made sure that
she would still get royalties for band streams.
There will be a small gallery of drawings and links to more pages at the bottom of this page. Such as press she is featured in, more pedantic details on her singing songs, etc.
